An Ode to Newsstand

by Ruby on May 18, 2011

Rebecca, one of our Cashiers, has some great magazine recommendations from our Newsstand, located at the Colorado entrance to the main store.

As a voracious bibliophile, I can often lose myself for hours in the stacks here at Vroman’s when I happen to come in on my day off. Once I started working outside at the Newsstand, situated just off the Colorado Boulevard sidewalk, I realized that there is also a wealth of information printed on the glossy sheets of the periodicals we carry. No longer limited to books, I began to peruse the pages of a vast range of magazines, from the New Yorker to Mental Floss to Scientific American Mind and back to the celebrity magazines I secretly hold so dear to my heart. As newsstands have become endangered as a species, I feel the time has come for us to honor this dying breed. Permit me to introduce you to a few of my favorites…

  1. The New YorkerThe New Yorker. This weekly magazine resides very near and dear to my nerdy little heart, for its wide range of topics from the usage of Freud’s teachings in China, to Tina Fey’s rants on show business, to even a closer look at the Vatican Library. The New Yorker deals with politics, fiction, new film reviews, pop culture, foreign affairs, and so much more, in every issue! In fact, I was so won over by this magazine that after I bought the first issue of 2011, I absolutely had to subscribe!! This has proven to be one of the better decisions I’ve made this year. If, somehow, you’ve managed to live your entire life without ever picking up the New Yorker, you mustmustmust do so the next time you come by our newsstand!
  2. DiscoverDiscover. As someone who appreciates science put into easily understood terms, I find myself pawing through Discover magazine on a regular basis. This magazine is so cool!! Ar ticles I’ve seen recently deal with human evolution, oddities in nature, our travels and possibilities in space, and even the inner workings of the human brain! Discover compiles some of the most interesting and popular latest findings in science and scientific research. And, if you like Discover, check out their special interest magazine Discover Presents: THE BRAIN!
  3. SaveurSaveur. I love food, as most humans do. This magazine makes me so hungry, because every month their covers feature some of the tastiest looking dishes I’ve ever seen!! Aside from the pictures, this magazine provides you with some seriously scrumptious recipes from tamale tarts to fried calamari sandwiches. This is, without a doubt, my favorite magazine in our Cooking section out at the newsstand.
  4. DwellDwell. Their claim to be “at home in the modern world” fits so well. This magazine has absolutely gorgeous images of modern architecture and design. This magazine has featured modern beach bungalows, plush desert getaways, and utterly beautiful pictures of modern urban dwellings. This magazine would be more than enough for me if it only had pictures, but wait! There’s more! Dwell also gives ideas on how to update your space and even has articles on featured travel destinations, interviews with designers, and explanations on how to live “green” in your home. I love this magazine!

Beyond these few, there are literally hundreds of magazines at our Newsstand on Colorado. Aside from my favorites, we have so many different titles from a variety of subjects to choose from! Our sections include Science, Art, Literary Journals and Writing magazines, Foreign and International newspapers and magazines, Sports, Music, and more! I discover something new and different every day that I work out at the Newsstand. It’d be a shame to make a visit to our illustrious bookstore and not check out our periodicals outside!

From my geeky heart to all of you, thanks for reading my loving rant!

The Vroman’s Newsstand is open Monday-Thursday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Fabulous reviews Rebecca. Always a joy to visit the news stand when you’re working and chew the fat on what you’ve read recently.
