Banned Books Week 2015!

by Jessica on September 23, 2015

Every year around this time we have the privilege of celebrating
Banned Books Week!
This year we are celebrating from
Sunday Sept. 27-Saturday Oct. 3.

If you’re not quite sure what exactly Banned Books Week is here is a little background.

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Typically held during the last week of September, it highlights the value of free and open access to information. Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community –- librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types –- in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

By focusing on efforts across the country to remove or restrict access to books, Banned Books Week draws national attention to the harms of censorship. Check out the frequently challenged books section to explore the issues and controversies around book challenges and book banning. The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted with removal or restrictions in libraries and schools. While books have been and continue to be banned, part of the Banned Books Week celebration is the fact that, in a majority of cases, the books have remained available. This happens only thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, students, and community members who stand up and speak out for the freedom to read.

Even today books get challenged more than you would think. Luckily, for us and the work of the people mentioned above we are able to keep these challenged books out in the public. Definitely worth some celebrations!

The Children’s Department at the Main Store always does a spectacular display every year and of course this year is no different. This display takes up a whole wall and really should be seen in person but here are a few photos so you can get a glimpse of it!

Over at our Hastings Ranch location there are a number of events throughout the week to help celebrate. The full list of events is below and we hope you’ll be able to make one, two or all of them! It’s a great week to get involved in the community.
