Borders: An Indie’s Perspective

by Ruby on February 16, 2011

Big news today: Borders, one of the two dominant brick-and-mortar bookstore chains in the nation, is closing nearly a third of its locations. That includes the Glendale Borders and the Pasadena location, just down the street. Despite them being local competition, those of us here at Vroman’s are saddened. Any bookstore closing is a loss for the community; our thoughts go out to the booksellers who find themselves without jobs, the customers who find themselves without their usual bookstore, and of course the publishers.  Some of our current employees came from a Borders background, so we can attest to the excellence of their staff, and we wish them the best.

On the other hand, Vroman’s has been here for 116 years, and we plan to keep that up. We’re very sad to see Borders go, but we’re also excited for the future. We’re excited to have those customers who have been displaced by the loss of Borders discover our store – just a few blocks from the Lake St. location – and all we have to offer! As always, we will continue to provide excellent customer service, an expertly curated stock of 85,000+ titles, an extensive selection of gift, handmade, and fair trade items, free gift wrap, free parking, a focus on local communities and interests, the charitable Vroman’s Gives Back program, 400+ events a year, trendsetting jewelry, clothing, and accessories… the list goes on and on.

In addition, Vroman’s is offering a special deal to Borders Rewards Club Members. The first 200 people to bring their Borders Rewards Plus cards into any Vroman’s location can exchange them for a $20 Vroman’s gift card. Just a little something to say “We’re here for you.”
