Christopher Meeks: Fan of Indie Bookstores

by Patrick on March 4, 2009

There’s plenty of great stuff online today, but nothing warmed me up quite like finding this terrific post at She is Too Fond of Books by Christopher Meeks about, well, us.  To sum up the article, we at Vroman’s once took a chance on his books, and he hasn’t forgotten.  He has other reasons why he likes our store:

I love the place because it was the first bookstore to carry my books, and it will be hosting a reading and publication party of my new novel, The Brightest Moon of the Century, on March 7th at 5 p.m.

I also like its “Our Staff Recommends” section, with its friendly and passionate notes on the choices, and the “Autographed by the Author” section, which reflects the eclectic array of speakers in its reading series. There’s usually a reading every night of the week. The place radiates energy. Publishers Weekly last year selected Vroman’s as the Bookseller of the Year.

We’ll be hosting Christopher’s book release party and reading this Saturday at 5 p.m.  Stop by and say hello.

As a sometimes book collector as well as an occasional reader of the stuff I too was always a fan of the “‘Autographed by the Author’ section”. I write “was” because many months ago (years?) this section disappeared and the signed books were dispersed throughout the store. This troubled me. Yet I’ve managed to work through it and now find pleasure in hunting for these potential little treasures. My question: is this section back or what?

Lee,

We do still have an Autographed by the Author section. It’s relatively close to hardcover fiction, near that one lone register by the newsstand. We try to shelve a few signed books in their category-appropriate sections, too, though, just to hit both spots.
