When I lived in Milwaukee, I didn't have a car or many friends, so I would sometimes give myself weekend challenges like, how long would it take me to visit all of the Schwartz bookshops by bus (all the stores are right on a busline)? Or, how long would it take me to walk from the Schwartz on Downer to the Schwartz in Shorewood? The answer to both was the better part of a glorious afternoon spent among books. (Also, of course, happily, the better part of my paycheck.)

I no longer live in Milwaukee, but I was there a few weeks ago for a wedding, and my present to the bookish bride and groom was a giftcard to Harry W. Schwartz. I will miss visiting the stores very much.

Lanora,

I had heard that was happening. That's the lone bit of good news in all of this. Good luck with the new store(s). It's great to see that those neighborhoods will still have independent bookstores in them.

Best,

Patrick

Thank you for your great comments. This is a sad hard day for us here at the Harry W. Schwartz family. However, there is a small light. Daniel Goldin, our buyer, will be opening his own independent bookstore in the Downer Ave. location and Lanora Hurley (me!), a manager of one of the shops, will be opening another independent bookstore in the Mequon location. It is our hope to keep independent bookselling alive and well in the greater Milwaukee area. We appreciate and take to heart the support and love that has been coming from all of our bookseller friends from across the country. Best wishes, Lanora

Thanks Patrick. Your kind words are a balm for sore souls. We will never go away, just change shape a little, move along someplace else...but we will always be booksellers at heart.
