Monday at BEA: eBooks, Great New Authors, and More!

by Ruby on May 24, 2011

BEAJen, one of Vroman’s women on the streets at this year’s Book Expo America (BEA), has an exciting recap of Monday’s events! Read on…

Day one of the BEA started with the ABA (American Booksellers Association) Day of Education held at the Javits Convention Center. I attended some really great workshops speaking on online marketing for the store and YA events. New ways to communicate with our customers and getting the word out to potential new customers. I also attended a talk on e-books and the new things the ABA is working on so we can better serve Vroman’s e-reader shoppers!

*A fun thing to watch for in June – for three days in June Unbridled Books will be offering 25 titles for 25cents each, which you will be able to order from Vroman’s! So if anyone hasn’t tried downloading an e-book from our website yet, this would be a perfect time to do so. More details to come!

Snow ChildIn the evening I attended a wonderful dinner for Little, Brown and had a chance to meet some new and exciting authors, Eowyn Ivey (The Snow Child), Ayad Akhtar (American Dervish), and Chad Harbach (The Art of Fielding) and indie bookstore favorite Josh Bazell. Last year he released Beat the Reaper and his follow up is coming soon, called Wild Thing. Eowyn was especially fun to talk to because aside from being a very promising new author, she is also currently a bookseller herself, in Alaska. Wild ThingWe talked so much about bookselling, at first, that someone had to step in and make sure we knew that she was one of the guests of honor at the dinner. 🙂 Two additional authors in attendance, who I unfortunately didn’t get a chance to speak to, were Pete Hamill (Tabloid City) and Luis Alberto Urrea (Queen of America – due out in December of this year). The dinner was excellent and the company even more so. Keep a look out for all of the authors and their books listed above. There is not a miss in the bunch.
