The Best Things to Do in Los Angeles: 1001 Ideas
By Joy Yoon

Now that I’m officially a (San Gabriel) valley girl I thought it was time to explore my surroundings a bit more. Add to that I’m Looking to play tour guide for some out-of-town visitors (read: my parents). This is your typical guide book; however, it is a very good version of a guide book. The commentary on each listing is succinct and informative. Best of all, I have a growing list of things to do and places to dine at, more than enough to keep me occupied for years to come.

God’s Middle Finger: Into the Lawless Heart of the Sierra Madre
By Richard Grant

British Grant is obsessed with a place that would terrify most Yanks: Mexico’s Sierra Madre mountains. Populated with drug lords and drunkards, more than three hours from any law enforcement, the Sierra Madres are also fiercely beautiful and physically challenging. Grant learns firsthand how such beauty and ugliness can co-exist.

Secret Stairs: A Walking Guide to the Historic Staircases of Los Angeles
By Charles Fleming
As the writer of this blog I also HIGHLY recommend this book! I have done quote a few of the stair hikes around LA. Charles Fleming also leads a monthly hike which I have also been on. It’s fun to hike with him and 70 other stair hike lovers! It’s a great way to get some exercise while seeing parts of the city that you may not have seen before. Charles gives a little history lesson with every hike. Now we just need an app to go with it!
