My five fave books (of all time/slash 10/2009) are in no particular order...

A Prayer For Owen Meany
The Brothers K
I Know This Much is True (I think i get to throw in The Hour I First Believed)
Rain of Gold
Interpreter of Maladies

I loved Oscar Wao, too but not sure if it makes my top 5.

Re your question: "is it possible to hate something and think it’s well-written and worthwhile at the same time?"

I found Atonement excruciating to read because of the sheer injustice of the events portrayed, but I think it is a brilliant book and I am glad I read it - twice, in fact. It was less painful the second time because I knew what was coming. (Hate is the wrong word for this situation, however.)
