Small Business Saturday (November 30th this year) has become a huge part of the holiday season here at Vroman’s, and we can’t tell you enough how much we appreciate all of the support from our customers and other local businesses in the area. While shopping with us on this busy day helps our store, it’s also a great thing for our city and community. By shopping at local, small, or independent businesses, you’re supporting your neighbors, and by doing this, the money you spend stays in the community (your lovely, wonderful community!) and gives not only these businesses, but the local economy, a boost. Yes, you may pay a little more at these places, but when you think about it, does that honestly matter? When you pay that extra dollar or two, I promise it’s totally worth it— you’re getting so much more than the items in your bag. Local businesses contribute to a city’s identity and are a huge part of the reason you love living in or visiting a city in the first place. These stores and restaurants know their neighborhood and work together to improve it. The employees in these places know you— they know your favorite coffee, what you order for lunch, the next book you’ll love to pieces. Supporters and employees of local businesses are full of pride for these places and their community, and they’re ready to shout it from the rooftops. So, while I’d love to have you visit Vroman’s and do all of your holiday shopping with us (which would be ridiculously fun, I assure you), that’s not entirely what this is about.
This is about who we are and and what makes our community our community.
This year for Small Business Saturday, Vroman’s invites you to partake in a day full of wonderful authors, local businesses, and general holiday merriment. There’s so much to on this day- I hope you’ll share in the festivities with us!
Author Sherman Alexie’s Indies First movement asks authors to support their local independent bookstore by working as a bookseller for a few hours on November 30. (You can read his open letter to authors here.) This is amazing for several reasons— we have lovely authors local to the area who will be joining us for this busy day and you can meet them and pick their brains and they will hand-sell their favorite books to you while you shop for gifts (but you can also shop for yourself- don’t you ever forget that!) Here’s 0ur schedule of authors for the big day, listed with their most recent book title:

There will also be live music throughout the Playhouse District on this day— Vroman’s will have a performance by Bloom from 3pm-5pm outside on the paseo. You can make a whole day of it— there’s definitely something for everyone—you can find the full list of establishments, schedule of events, and special offers here.
Small Business Saturday
Founded in 2010 by American Express as a day dedicated to supporting small, local, and independent businesses across the country, Small Business Saturday has evolved over the past few years. Millions of people have joined the movement, and we hope that even more join this year. American Express holders who spend $10 or more at businesses registered on the Shop Small map are eligible for a $10 credit on their American Express statement (cardholders must register their cards online to track this purchase). Note: Vroman’s is a registered store on the Shop Small map, however, the location was listed incorrectly— you need to search “vroman” and it should pop up on the map. So, when you look up Vroman’s Bookstore and you don’t see it, don’t panic- we’re on there, we’re just hiding… Vroman’s Hastings Ranch and Book Soup are also registered stores!
So, I hope you’ll join us for our day and celebrate the independent businesses that make Pasadena so Pasadena.
I’d also venture to say that Small Business Saturday is a significantly more pleasant experience than Black Friday— you don’t need to camp out in a tent for 4 days to have a good time with us. Just head over and see us on Saturday. We open at 9am.
