Book blogger Bookavore has written a terrific, passionate post encouraging bloggers to link to Indiebound.org instead of a chain bookstore or online retailer. The practice of linking to Amazon as a sort of default is one of my least favorite things about the Internet (My favorite things about the internet are sites like Kottke.org and Boing Boing and services like Twitter and Tumblr and of course, being able to talk to you, good reader). Yes, Amazon pays affiliate fees, but so does Powells and now so does Indiebound. If you value local business, unique character and the entrepreneurial spirit, linkindie. You’ll still get the affiliate fees, and trust me, you’ll feel much better about it.
As Bookavore says: Read. Review. LinkIndie.

For authors that appear at our shop, I take it a step further and inform the author that unless indiebound is listed as an option I cannot promote their website via our e-newsletter, web site or Facebook. Most are very cool about it.
Peace

That’s interesting, Rob, as I don’t think I’ve ever decided whether to link to an author’s site based on that. Have you had any authors switch to linking to an indie because of it?
